About the Item

Heather Farrell Title : XOX Materials : Mixed media on canvas Date : 2020 Dimensions : 3' x 3' (36 x 36 in.) Description : I view imagery and the symbolism of snakes as a rebirth, a reinvention to a better self. The shedding of old to make way for new. The beauty and grace of nature always inspire me. The compartmentalizing of the flowers is a backlash against the idea of nature ever being limited or reduced to humanity's containment of nature. The push and pull of containment and freedom is ever present in our human experience and I use nature as a way to illustrate this notion. Signed, COA provided Heather Farrell works primarily with pastels on paper. This medium works well for Farrell because it allows her to work more loosely and enjoy the art-making process more. Farrell often finds inspiration from nature elements and aims to address ideals surrounding beauty and the search for perfection in today's society. Farrell often observes this in the bombardment of internet/social media images. For Farrell, the search for perfection takes a life of its own and often leaves people feeling empty, as if certain ideals of beauty can never be fully realized. Farrell especially finds it interesting and disturbing that as we become slightly more advanced we in turn try to change nature and natural beauty; bend it to our will for our own needs. Painting, contemporary art, contemporary artists, abstract, figurative, beauty, nature, space, cultural commentary, surrealism, geometric abstraction, minimalism

Jillidu
By Michael Kessler
Located in Three Oaks, MI
Michael Kessler makes nature-based paintings that merge geometric elements with biomorphism. He began his art career as a landscape painter. While an undergraduate at Kutztown University Kessler received a fellowship from the Whitney Museum of American Art to study and produce art in New York City at the Whitney Independent Study Program. Michael Kessler’s work explores the continuum between gesture and geometry. Each work consists of as many as 50 micro-thin layers of translucent and transparent acrylic. Biomorphic tendrils branch to and fro, while arcs of line and color slip over and under matrices, balancing nature’s sinuous curves with the mindfulness of structure. He likens the gestural freedom in his works to a kind of painterly “tai chi” – a...

FDWFK WKH PBWK (cryptography series)
By Thomas Paul Raggio
Located in New York, NY
Abstract. Vibrant. Painting. About the Artist: "I contemplate every color, mark, and placement of the line to formulate what I call rhythmic velocities: relationships of color and motion that give life to the composition, creating a heartbeat. I am interested in the duality of math and design: through repetition, a line made of color becomes a rhythmic pattern. This concept is found when composing music, organic landscapes and architectural structures. By referencing these sources, my abstractions transcend their formal components, reaching beyond a minimalist canon. My work is composed of hard edges and thin lines set against an abstract field or a pictorial space. Each color has a quickness that is relative to the colors surrounding it; this gives my paintings visual movement and dislocates the viewer. Through linear and geometric forms, my paintings explore design and mathematical concepts found broadly throughout culture. They are improvised from a wide range of sources such as my conversations with scholars in various fields of music, architecture and engineering, my life experiences and travels."
