About the Item
This rare and historic Orientalist painting, La Petite Dieu, translated as “Little God”, by renowned Armenian-American artist Hovsep Pushman.
First exhibited March 27 – April 7, 1928, at the Grand Central Art Galleries in New York City, this painting was also featured in the original exhibition catalog of Pushman’s works.
Oil on canvas, signed lower left. Original period frame.
The piece is housed in its original antique frame, which adds to its historical significance. While the frame is very old and shows signs of age—some areas of the wood are worn or missing—the painting itself remains in good condition.
This deeply spiritual and mystical work reflects Pushman’s fascination with Eastern philosophies, symbolism, and timeless beauty. It is now part of the esteemed collection of Lucy Ishkanian Tankian, president, curator, and archivist of the Hovsep Pushman estate.
About the Artist:
Hovsep Pushman was a master of refined still lifes and Orientalist compositions. Trained in Paris at Académie Julian, his works were widely celebrated for their meditative quality, exotic iconography, and glowing, velvety finish. His paintings are held in major institutions and private collections worldwide.
