About the Item
Light in the Darkness (IV)* is a 2024 acrylic and glow-in-the-dark painting by Nigerian artist Ifeoluwa Alade, created for his solo exhibition *The Sprout of Hope* at Abend Gallery. Measuring 24 x 20 inches (60.96 x 50.80 cm), the unframed but ready-to-hang canvas demonstrates Alade’s signature Araism technique, where rhythmic interwoven brushstrokes and tonal layering are used to build deeply symbolic visual narratives.
The painting presents a powerful juxtaposition of human skeletal remains with bright blossoms and fluttering butterflies. Vines of morning glories climb through ribcages and skulls, while butterflies land delicately atop bone and bloom alike. These elements are layered against a repeating crimson pattern in which the biblical verse Job 14:7 is subtly inscribed—a reference to the work’s spiritual grounding: “For there is hope of a tree, if it be cut down, that it will sprout again…”
This composition speaks to cycles of mortality and regeneration, embodying the exhibition’s central themes of resilience, hope, and divine restoration. Alade’s use of glow-in-the-dark medium adds a layer of quiet revelation—light emerging even from death, visually echoing the enduring presence of spirit and renewal.
Ifeoluwa Alade creates introspective paintings that explore human emotions and relationships through a distinctive woven technique. Born in Nigeria in 1995, Alade earned his Fine and Applied Arts degree from Obafemi Awolowo University, where he studied under mentor Jonathan Imafidor, who significantly influenced his artistic development. Working primarily in oil, acrylic, and watercolor, Alade's style evolved from the African "Araism" movement to his current approach, which portrays figures as compositions of interwoven elements symbolizing the complex amalgamation of experiences, thoughts, and emotions that form human identity.
His work examines interpersonal connections, often using symbolism like butterflies and flowers to represent relationships as valuable forms of human existence. Represented by Abend Gallery, Alade has exhibited in solo presentations and prestigious art fairs including the LA Art Show and Scope Art Show in Miami, where the gallery has championed his work internationally.
