About the Item

Artist: Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913 – 2003) Title: Gypsy Women in Ibiza Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 38 × 46 cm (unframed) — 15 × 18 in Signature: Signed lower left: Ignacio Gil Period: Second half of the 20th century Condition: Excellent. The pictorial surface is stable, with well-preserved color and paint texture. The lighter areas correspond to original white brushstrokes, with no overpainting or losses. Framing: Unframed Provenance: Private collection DESCRIPTION In Gypsy Women in Ibiza, Ignacio Gil Sala captures a vibrant, sunlit scene of daily life: a group of gypsy women and girls gathered in a festive atmosphere, adorned with shawls, ruffled dresses, and flowers in their hair. The artist’s broad and impasto brushwork, combined with bright tones of blue, green, and pink, brings dynamism and joy to the composition. The work reflects the Mediterranean spirit and the artist’s fascination with light and the popular life of the Balearic Islands. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913 – 2003) was a post-impressionist painter trained at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona, where he studied under Félix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. From an early age, he demonstrated exceptional skill in drawing, earning the school’s Bronze Medal in 1930 and a national study grant in 1936. During the Spanish Civil War, he received the support of sculptor Mariano Benlliure, which allowed him to continue his artistic development. Throughout his career, he exhibited widely in Spain and abroad (France, Switzerland, the Philippines, the United States, Canada, Colombia), and was a regular presence in galleries in Palma, Barcelona, Madrid, and Cannes. His style—rooted in impressionism and Mediterranean sensibility—is characterized by decisive brushwork, strong color contrasts, and an ongoing pursuit of light. His subjects include landscapes, harbors, popular scenes, and portraits, with a particular focus on Ibiza and the Mediterranean coast. RELATED AND COMPARABLE ARTISTS José Royo (1941– ) – for his colorful treatment and Mediterranean themes. Félix Revello de Toro (1926–2021) – for affinity in female portraiture and popular scenes. Hermenegildo Anglada Camarasa (1871–1959) – influential in the vibrant use of color, though more ornamental. José Cruz Herrera (1890–1972) – similar in his costumbrista approach and depiction of popular female figures.
