About the Item

Author: Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913 – 2003) Title: Ibiza Market Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 73 × 92 cm (unframed) — 28.7 × 36.2 in Signature: Signed lower left: Ignacio Gil Period: Second half of the 20th century Condition: Very good. Stable canvas with vivid colors and a well-preserved original paint surface. No visible retouching or restorations. Framing: Unframed Provenance: Private collection DESCRIPTION In Ibiza Market, Ignacio Gil Sala masterfully captures a lively Mediterranean scene bathed in sunlight. Beneath the white awnings of the market, women and children gather among fruits, flowers, and ceramics, enveloped in an atmosphere of joy and bustle. The artist employs his characteristic loose, impasto brushwork, with contrasts of light and shadow that bring dynamism to the composition. Ochres, violets, and turquoise tones intertwine in a chromatic play evoking the warmth and vitality of the island. This painting is a representative example of Gil Sala’s luminous costumbrismo —a style combining realistic observation with a highly personal sense of color. ARTIST BIOGRAPHY Ignacio Gil Sala (Barcelona, 1913 – 2003) trained at the School of Fine Arts of Barcelona under Félix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. From an early age, he demonstrated exceptional talent for light and color, earning several prizes and study grants. Throughout his career, he developed a Mediterranean-style costumbrismo with strong Impressionist influence, notable for his landscapes, seascapes, and popular scenes from Ibiza, Cadaqués, and Sitges. He exhibited successfully in Spain, France, Switzerland, the United States, Canada, and the Philippines, and his works are held in private collections and European museums. In Castelldefels, where he lived much of his life, a street bears his name in recognition of his artistic contribution. Related artists: For his treatment of light and Mediterranean themes, Gil Sala’s work is close to that of Eliseu Meifrén, Ricard Opisso, Joaquim Mir, Josep Mompou, and Ramón Calsina.
