About the Item

Isaac de Moucheron (Amsterdam 1667 - 1744) circle Renaissance garden with knightly festival Oil on canvas 70 x 98 cm. In frame 106 x 133 cm. We present this delightful composition, in which a sumptuous Italian garden provides the backdrop for a spectacle involving knights, specifically a carousel, a type of equestrian and theatrical event popular in European courts between the 16th and 18th centuries, in which knights in costume performed feats of skill on special occasions. The composition is dominated by two knights in the foreground who seem to be waiting to perform on their steeds, while behind them others wait their turn, dressed in ceremonial robes, red and gold cloaks and elaborate headgear. The scene depicts a court event, as was common in Italian gardens and historic villas: such events were often staged to celebrate weddings, royal visits or other important occasions, as we can imagine from the presence of the two trumpeters in the foreground announcing the participants to the sound of their instruments, adding a sense of grandeur to the event depicted. In the background stands a light-coloured Renaissance-style stone structure with sculptural figures on top, surrounded by the vegetation of the garden, reminiscent of a monumental fountain or the façade of a palace. A couple, perhaps royalty, are positioned in the centre as if on a throne, flanked by other figures watching the spectacle. The painting captures the festive and ceremonial atmosphere of such court entertainments. The work, probably based on a real place, is certainly inspired by one of the many gardens that adorned the large villas on the hills between Florence and Rome. Our artist must necessarily have taken his cue for the setting from the famous series of prints entitled Fontane di Roma (Fountains of Rome, 1680) by Giovanni Battista Falda (1643-1678), some of which are shown in the photographic details. Thanks to the stylistic characteristics of the work, which are unquestionably in keeping with 17th-century Flemish culture, we are inclined to attribute it to one of the Northern painters who came to the Eternal City to study. In particular, there are many iconographic and stylistic similarities with a specific iconographic trend taken up by the Flemish artist Isaac de Moucheron (Amsterdam 1667 - 1744) during his stay in Rome, and the author could therefore likely be found within his circle. ADDITIONAL INFORMATION: The painting is sold complete with an attractive gilded frame and comes with a certificate of authenticity and a descriptive iconographic card. Knight Van Douw Paint Oil on canvas Old master 17/18th Century Flemish Art Italy
By Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677)
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
After Simon Johannes van Douw (Antwerp c. 1630 - c. 1677) The stop of a traveler on horseback near a post station Oil painting on canvas 45 x 55 cm In frame cm. 55 x 65 In this pleasant painting, depicting a knight parked near a post station, the Flemish tradition is based on a strong Italianizing sensitivity, especially by observing the setting and its peculiar brightness. The mixture of genres and the particular style of execution make it easy to trace the authorship back to a Nordic author but active in Rome, or strongly influenced by the style in vogue in the Eternal city, between the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries: we are referring, in in particular, to a follower of the Antwerp Simon Johannes van Douw. The chromatic elegance and refinement with which he outlines the figures are typical aspects of his painting. The scene takes place outside a cottage, probably a post office for travelers, where a modest family divides the tasks by assisting the knights. We see a young boy who hands water to the horse before he sets off again, the father is preparing to feed him with straw and the mother who instead takes care of the little son. The Italian reminiscences, evident in our painting, have been absorbed by many Northern European authors such as Nicolaes Berchem, Philips Wouwerman or Johannes Lingelbach, all inspired by the leader Pieter van Laer...

Fete Champetre - Garden Party - French 18thC figurative landscape oil painting
Located in Hagley, England
This charming 18th century French Old Master oil painting is attributed to circle of Joseph Frans Nollekens. Painted circa 1740 it is described as a fete champetre - a form of entertainment in the 18th century, taking the form of a garden party. They were often elegant affairs and became very popular in 18th French paintings. Antoine Watteau invented the genre, from around 1710 and they were also included as a category in the French Academy. In this painting, several well dressed figures are sat in the foreground by a fountain and statue, being entertained by a musician. Beyond, a wide avenue of trees leads towards a very grand country house with countryside beyond. There is superb detail in the figures and their colourful clothing. The brushwork in the trees and sky is also superb. This is a charming example of an 18th century fete champetre and of a French Old Master oil painting. Provenance. Gloucester estate. Condition. Oil on canvas. Image size 49 inches by 30 inches and in good condition. Frame. Housed in a fine gilt frame, 56 inches by 37 inches and in good condition. Josef Frans Nollekens or Joseph Frans Nollekens (1702–1748)[2] was a Flemish painter who was principally active in England where he is often referred to as "Old Nollekens" to distinguish him from his famous son, the sculptor Joseph Nollekens. He painted conversation pieces, galant companies and fêtes champêtres in the style of Watteau, genre scenes as well as portraits. He was also active as a picture restorer. A fête champêtre was a form of entertainment in the 18th century, taking the form of a garden party. This form of entertainment was particularly practised by the French court, where in the Gardens of Versailles and elsewhere areas of the park were landscaped with follies, pavilions, and temples to accommodate such festivities. The term is a French expression, very literally translating as "party in the fields", meaning a "pastoral festival" or "country feast" and in theory was a simple form of entertainment, perhaps little more than a picnic or informal open air dancing. In practice, especially in the 18th century, the simplicity of the event was often contrived. A fête champêtre was often a very elegant form of entertainment involving on occasions whole orchestras hidden in trees, with guests sometimes in fancy dress. Such events became a popular subject in French 18th-century painting, representing a glamourized aristocratic form of pastoral, with "scenes of well dressed dalliance in a park setting". Antoine Watteau invented the genre, from around 1710, and is its best exponent, imitated by others such as Nicolas Lancret and Jean-Baptiste Pater...
