About the Item

James Roy Hopkins Interior of Église Saint-Sulpice, Paris, 1908 Signed and dated lower left and inscribed "Paris" Oil on canvas 17 3/4 x 14 3/4 inches Provenance Private Collection, GA Estate of the above, 2025 James Roy Hopkins was born in 1877 in the rural farming town of Irwin, Ohio. His mother, who enjoyed painting with watercolors in her spare time, nurtured his artistic inclinations. Although he shared her passion for art, Hopkins first attended Ohio State University in 1896 to pursue electrical engineering. However, he soon left to briefly study at the Columbus School of Art before transferring to the Art Academy of Cincinnati, where he was a student of Frank Duveneck. In 1900, he relocated to New York City, where he worked as an illustrator for medical textbooks. Two years later, he journeyed to Paris, then the epicenter of the art world. While in Paris, he honed his skills at the Académie Colarossi. He fully embraced life in the city, mingling with renowned artists like Pierre August Renoir, Claude Monet, and Edgar Degas. At that time, his artwork evolved to feature fewer details, looser brushstrokes, and a greater focus on lighting. In 1904, he returned to Ohio to marry Edna Boies, a talented printmaker and fellow student from the Art Academy of Cincinnati. Shortly thereafter, the couple returned to Paris and traveled extensively through Europe, Asia, and Northern Africa. The onset of World War I in 1914 compelled them to return to Ohio, where Hopkins accepted a teaching role at the Cincinnati Academy of Art. During his tenure at the Academy, the Hopkins spent their summers in the nearby Cumberland Mountains of Kentucky. From 1915 to 1917, they established a studio at an inn and formed friendships with the local mountain residents. James, drawing from his own rural background, felt a bond with these isolated families and gradually gained their trust. His empathetic depictions of the Cumberland Falls community represent his most celebrated body of work, capturing the subjects authentically with the signs of their challenging lives apparent on their faces, while also portraying them with dignity and respect. After the death of his former teacher, Frank Duveneck, in 1919, Hopkins succeeded him as the head of the Cincinnati Academy of Art. In 1923, he was invited to serve as the artist in residence at Ohio State University and was soon appointed as the head of the Art department. Following the unexpected passing of Edna, Hopkins returned to his childhood farm and continued teaching at the university until 1947. He passed away in 1969 at the age of ninety-one.
