Il dipinto rientra nel corpus delle opere dell'importante paesaggista fiammingo Jan Frans Van Bloemen.
I Van Bloemen erano una famiglia di artisti, fra essi Jan Frans nato ad Anversa, fu allievo di Anton Goubau, un pittore specializzato in scene di mercato nello stile dei bamboccianti.
Dopo aver passato diverso tempo in giro per la Francia, dal 1688 si trasferì a Roma dove rimase per il resto della sua vita, rimanendo comunque un intenso viaggiatore.
Van Bloemen ebbe un enorme successo a Roma, diventando uno dei più richiesti paesaggisti della nobiltà e della curia romana.
Il dipinto può essere attribuito alla fase giovanile dell'attività del pittore per lo stile delle pennellate e non tradisce l'influenze di Dughet e di Locatelli. La scena è una raffigurazione idilliaca, in cui in un paesaggio ameno con fiume si vedono un pastore con il gregge, due figure intente a colloquiare e una donna che si avvicina a prendere l'acqua.
