About the Item

Jasper F. Cropsey Janetta Falls, New Jersey, circa 1846 Signed J.F. Cropsey Oil on canvas 12½ x 10¾ inches Provenance Private Collection, New York, 1930s Thence by descent to the present owner Painted circa 1846, this is a view of Janetta Falls (now known as Clinton Falls) in West Milford, New Jersey, the town in which the artist’s wife, Maria, grew up. Cropsey painted at least two similar but much larger views of Janetta Falls also in 1846: Janetta Falls, Passaic County, New Jersey, oil on canvas (24 x 21 inches), is in the collection of the Santa Barbara Museum of Art; and Janetta Falls, New Jersey, oil on canvas (65 x 48 inches), is in the collection of the Baltimore Museum of Art. Cropsey, the eldest of eight children, was born in Rossville, Staten Island, New York, on his father Jacob Rezeau Cropsey's farm. Cropsey experienced bouts of ill health as a young lad. Cropsey learned how to sketch on his own while he was not in class. He drew landscapes and architectural sketches in the margins of his schoolbooks and on notepads throughout his early years. Early in the 1840s, Cropsey studied architecture under Joseph Trench. During this time, he also received instruction from Edward Maury in watercolor painting and enrolled in some life drawing classes at the National Academy of Design. He opened his own architectural practice in 1843, but it wasn't until 1844 that he started showing his watercolors at the National Academy of Design. After being elected an associate member a year later, he focused solely on painting landscapes, and soon after, he was included in the "Italian Compositions" exhibition. Cropsey visited England, France, Switzerland, and Italy on his 1847–1849 European tour. In 1851, he was elected as a full member of the Academy. Henry Tappan, who presided over the University of Michigan from 1852 until 1863, was a close friend of Cropsey. In 1855, he visited Ann Arbor at Tappan's invitation and created two paintings: a college scene and a painting of the Detroit Observatory. In 1856, he traveled overseas once more and lived in London for seven years, sending his photographs to the Royal Academy and the 1862 International Exhibition. After returning home, he established a studio in New York and focused on painting the fall landscapes of the northeastern United States, which were frequently romanticized and characterized by vibrant hues. In 1866, Cropsey and 10 other artists founded the American Society of Painters in Water Colors. Cropsey also created the architectural plans for New York's elevated train stations.

"Saratoga, " John Francis Murphy, Hudson River School, Tonalism
By John Francis Murphy
Located in New York, NY
John Francis Murphy (1853 - 1921) Saratoga, 1876 Graphite on paper Sight 8 3/4 x 10 1/2 inches Titled and dated to lower right Provenance: Babcock Galleries, New York Spanierman Gallery, New York In his lifetime, John Francis Murphy (1853-1921) was known as “the American Corot.” He was renowned for his small, intimate views of nature, especially barren fields and farms, bare trees, and lonely marshland. More than a century later, the power of Murphy’s landscapes has not waned. One contemporary critic wrote, “It was Murphy’s unique accomplishment to achieve an absolute realism without a loss of that mystic, indefinable quality which transfigures realism.” John Francis Murphy was born at Oswego, NY in 1853 but his family moved to Chicago in 1868 where he worked painting theater sets. Murphy was basically a self-taught artist; his only formal training was a few weeks of instruction at the Chicago Academy of Design. In 1875, Murphy moved from Chicago to New York, eventually rooming with the painters Dennis Bunker and Bruce Crane above a bakery shop. Murphy’s early work was typical of the Hudson River school but he soon fell under the sway of the loose brushwork and moody style of French Barbizon painting...
