About the Item
A French gouache on paper portrait of Don Quixote and Sancho Panza by Jean Paul Ducel. The painting is signed to the back where there is another painting of a clown.
A strong and colourful painting of these iconic characters on horseback. Ducel has chosen to show them riding away from us so they are almost in silhouette, the dark colours of the subjects contrasting with the lighter colour of the flanks of the horses. Don Quixote is in his armour with his lance ready to 'tip at windmills' and his faithful if more diminutive companion riding by his side.
Don Quixote is a Spanish novel by Miguel de Cervantes. It was originally published in two parts, in 1605 and 1615. Considered a founding work of Western literature, it is often labelled as the first modern novel. Don Quixote is also one of the most-translated books in the world and one of the best-selling novels of all time.
The plot revolves around the adventures of a member of the lowest nobility, an hidalgo from La Mancha named Alonso Quijano, who reads so many chivalric romances that he loses his mind and decides to become a knight-errant (caballero andante) to revive chivalry and serve his nation, under the name Don Quixote de la Mancha. He recruits as his squire a simple farm labourer, Sancho Panza, who brings a unique, earthy wit to Don Quixote's lofty rhetoric. In the first part of the book, Don Quixote does not see the world for what it is and prefers to imagine that he is living out a knightly story meant for the annals of all time. However, as Salvador de Madariaga pointed out in his Guía del lector del Quijote referring to "the Sanchification of Don Quixote and the Quixotization of Sancho", as "Sancho's spirit ascends from reality to illusion, Don Quixote's declines from illusion to reality".

Description of the Artwork
"Bullfighting Scene" by Roberto Domingo is a vibrant and dynamic depiction of a typical moment in a bullring. The composition captures the drama and intensity of the moment, with a mounted picador on a striking white horse as the centerpiece, flanked by a matador and assistants preparing for the spectacle. The artwork radiates energy through swift and loose brushstrokes, imbuing the scene with movement and vitality.
Domingo’s style emphasizes visual synthesis, focusing on color and form rather than meticulous detail to convey the atmosphere of the bullfighting arena. Warm tones dominate, with vibrant yellows and reds contrasting against the grays and whites of the horse and costumes, creating a captivating chromatic interplay.
The classic frame adds sobriety and balance to the piece, further highlighting the expressive power of the gouache.
