🧑🎨 ABOUT THE ARTIST
Jesús Villar (Madrid, 1930 – 2015) was a Spanish painter known for his realist approach and his profound focus on rural life. Throughout his career, he developed a vigorous and expressive style, centered on what he called the “universal peasant”: men and women of the countryside depicted with dignity, resilience, and a deep connection to the land.
Villar lived and worked across various regions of Spain —Castile, La Mancha, Andalusia, Santander, and Biscay— and also spent time abroad in Italy, Switzerland, and Venezuela. This wide range of experience enriched his work, marked by expressive realism, sculptural figures, and powerful compositions.
His paintings, featuring rural workers, fishermen, traditional processions, and countryside feasts, have been exhibited widely and sold at auction, earning the appreciation of collectors and art lovers.
🖌️ DESCRIPTION
Harvesters is a monumental composition that captures the intensity and hardship of agricultural labor. The scene is populated by peasants and pack animals, whose postures and expressions communicate exhaustion, unity, and a sense of timeless struggle.
The figures are built with sculptural solidity and sharp geometry, reminiscent of Mexican muralism and the social realism of postwar Europe. The expressive gestures, the sickle in the foreground, and the hunched bodies portray a narrative of human effort and resistance. The donkeys, with almost human expressions, reinforce this symbolic connection between man and beast.
Earthy tones, dramatic light, and a faceted brushwork style place this piece firmly within the tradition of expressive realism.

Oil measures 30x30 cm.
Frame measures 52x52 cm.
He was born in 1951. Under the direction of the teacher Pedro Bermejo, he began his artistic career, quickly standing out and observing in his works an unusual mastery of drawing.
A highly mature painter who has known how to stop time in all his works. His themes are preferably costumbrist, although in his work it is usual to see 18th century themes, with horse carriages, hats, umbrellas and still lifes.
Observing his work reminds us, due to the theme, of Maestro Palmero...

Ignacio Gil Sala, was a painter, bohemian character, adventurous and intrepid traveler who knew how to capture his eyes to that world with his painting. After starting his artistic training at the age of nine, Gil Sala entered the School of Fine Arts in Barcelona, where he had as teachers Felix Mestres and Vicente Borrás. Already in 1930, being still almost an apprentice, he obtained the bronze medal of the School, and in 1936 he won by contest a scholarship to make a study trip through Spain. Those were the difficult moments of the outbreak of the Civil War and thanks to the help of the sculptor Mariano Benlliure, he was able to complete his artistic training. Throughout his life Ignacio Gil dedicated himself to travel both in the Peninsula and in different Islamic and Latin American countries. He exhibited his work in Spain, France, the Philippines, Switzerland, the United States, Canada and Colombia, among many other countries.
