About the Item
The Chinese opera is a quintessentially Chinese cultural performance art, and began around 1790, when theater companies from all over China arrived in Beijing, to perform for the Qing Emperor Qianlong's birthday. The Chinese opera is still performed in Taiwan, China, Singapore today. There are generally four main categories of roles: sheng (the male roles), dan (the female roles). A "Hua Dan" represents a more feisty, flirtatious young woman. The actor wears distinctive elaborate costumes and conveys the story, and their emotions through voice, movement, and gestures.
"Farewell My Concubine" is a famous opera played by a male "Dan". Front facing "Dan" and back facing "Dan".
Sold separately or as a pair.
Chen Jiu (b. 1957) Chen Jiu produced a body of work on the Chinese Opera: "Spring at Jade Pavilion", "The Tipsy Consort Guifei", "the Hegemon's Farewell to His Concubine", "Changing Face", amongst others. His works demonstrate a literati flair and expressionism, striving to capture sadness or joy at the corner of a character's eye, along an eyebrow or in the expressive hand / finger gestures. An artist, Chen Jiu is also the director of Zhu Qizhan Art Museum and Shanghai Duolun Contemporary Museum.

Alexis Portilla's large scale pieces like Anemone, Black Elk, Thor Twins, Tokyo, Chromatic Fantasy are spectacular pieces in terms of the atmospheric brushwork, colors and textures. His bold linear lines, use of symbols, pictographs and strong colors create atmospheric abstracts.
Influenced by the emotion of artistic expression in music, poetry and literature, the artist finds bold expression in color, lines and shapes that resemble pictographs, and texture. Speak like a Child is a song title from a Herbie Hancock recording and Pale Fire...

Contemporary Chinese Ink Wash Painting by Li Jin
Located in Atlanta, GA
A contemporary ink painting on paper by Chinese artist Li Jin (1958-) presented in a white shadowbox frame. Entitled in English "Morning Practice in California", this series of work was painted in 2017 when the artist resided in US. The Chinese title inscription is "Blossom Branch" with artist's name signed in both Chinese and English. The painting is considered "Expressionistic-abstract". Using only various shades of ink, the poetic work depicts a large lotus flower with the pistil in the center composed of clusters of mediating arhats, the beings who have gained nirvana through Buddhism practice (known as Luohans in Chinese). There is a strong association of lotus flower and purity in Buddhism. The wisdom one can possibly achieve may be considered omnipresent and morphogenetical quantum and be part of everything around us. The image size is 13.5" x 13.5".
Provenance: Purchased in 2017 from the Ink Studio at West Bund Art and Design Fair, Shanghai, China.
Li Jin (1958-, Tianjin, China) is an ink master who draws from the tradition of Chinese literati ink painting and creates contemporary works celebrating all aspects of everyday life. Having explored color washes for two decades, Li Jin has translated them into a masterful control of tonality-the "five colors of ink"-in a series of monochrome paintings in the expressionistic-abstract "Da Xie Yi" manner. Through the ink medium's inherent sensitivity and ambiguity, they evoke the nuances of human existence and raise profound questions about self-representation and subjectivity. Trained at Tianjin Academy of Fine Arts (graduated in 1983) and has been a leading figure in contemporary Chinese ink art...
