18th Century European School Figurative and Landscape Painting of Soldiers at Rest
Evocative Dutch School painting of soldiers resting at end of day in old ruins, signed J. Kamp (Dutch, 19th Century), circa 1800s. In the general style of Johann Bernhard Wittkamp (Dutch, 1820-1885). Sparse, desolate landscape with cliffs in background and the sun casting light on gray, billowy clouds provides dramatic setting. Soldiers rest in the remains of an old church or house holding onto rifles and a broad ax while one soldier keeps watch.
Signed: Lower right hand corner
Medium: Oil on stretched linen
