About the Item
The work is inspired by the painting "Samuel Reports to Eli the Judgment of God Over His House" by the hand of J.S. Copley, preserved in the Wadsworth Atheneum in Hartford and dated 1780.
The episode depicted is taken from the Bible and is found in the First of the Two Books of Samuel, Ch. 3, vv. 1-20.
The slight differences with the painting bring it closer to the engraving taken from it, of which various versions exist from the 1820s onward.
The label on the back of the frame can be traced to Dominic Bolongaro, who was a print seller and framer who emigrated from northern Italy (Lake Como) to Manchester and kept a store at 32 Market Street from 1834 to 1848.
On the basis of these data, we can therefore propose a date for our work between 1830 and 1848 and ascribe it to British area production.
