Spinning Wool
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 12 inches x 17.75 inches
Size including frame: 17.25 inches x 23 inches
A pleasing genre painting of a woman spinning wool in a cottage by Jonathan Pratt. The woman is shown plying yarn with a spinning wheel and a Lazy Kate beside a fire with two cats. Above the window is a sign in Latin ‘Claro Pare’ which translates as ‘be clear’.
Jonathan Pratt was born at Bull Head Lane in Northampton on 27 April, 1835 to Joshua Pratt, a shoe maker and Rebecca Boys. He attended Lancastrian School in Northampton and showed an early talent for drawing and painting. At the age of 11, he went to Wolverhampton to be an apprentice to the portrait painter Robert Andrews, working with him at his studio in Waterloo Road.
After his apprenticeship was over, he began working as a full time artist in Lincolnshire where he met his wife Susana Strawson. They married on 6 November, 1856 at Claxby and moved to Leicester where their son, the artist Theophilus Claude Pratt (1860-1935) was later born. By 1861, the family had moved to 7 Camden Street in Doncaster where they lived for a few years until 1863 when they relocated to the Birmingham area.
Whilst Pratt initially worked as a portrait painter he developed his style and subject matter further to become a figurative painter, specialising in genre scenes. He started exhibiting in Birmingham from 1864 and made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1871. He also exhibited at Suffolk Street, the Royal Institute of British Artists, Glasgow Institute of Fine Art and other major galleries during his lifetime. His change of tack paid off and he became a successful artist. In 1872, he was made a Member of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists and in 1873 became the Director of the Costume Academy. He later became secretary of the Royal Birmingham Society of Artists, remaining in post until the year of his death.
By 1881, Pratt had settled at 19 Greenfield Crescent, Edgbaston where he lived and worked for over a decade. After the death of his wife, he lived at Wylde Green in Sutton Coldfield with the artist William Joseph King and his wife. He died at 53, Highbridge Road, Wylde Green on 27 August 1911.
His works show extensive use and knowledge of his palette, working large areas of light and shade with subtle mid tones. His figures are natural in poise giving them character and life. Examples of his paintings are held by the Birmingham Museum, Bristol Museum
Art Gallery, Guernsey Museum, Guildhall Art Gallery, John Wesley’s House
The Museum of Methodism, Leicester Town Hall and the Wednesbury Museum
Art Gallery.

Alfred Provis
British, (1818-1890)
By the Fireside
Oil on canvas, signed & dated 1869
Image size: 10.5 inches x 15.5 inches
Size including frame: 21.5 inches x 26.5 inches
This charming cottage scene by Alfred Provis features a woman preparing supper by a fire with her young daughter. As the mother peels the turnips and places them in the pot, the girl’s attention is drawn to the kitten feeding from a saucer. The dress and hat of the woman bears a similarity to those found Provis’s other scenes of Welsh cottage interiors. The artist was known to have visited North Wales around the time this painting was produced. In 1869, he exhibited a work entitled ‘Interior of a Welsh Farmhouse’ at the Royal Society of British Artists. Given the level of detail in the painting and the fact that it is in such an impressive original frame, it is possible this is the same painting as the one exhibited.
Alfred Provis was a genre painter born on 18 February, 1818 in Chippenham, Wiltshire. He was the son of John Provis, a timber merchant and his second wife Ann Banks. He spent time in London being tutored by the historical and portrait artist John Wood (1801-1870) before returning to Chippenham. He began exhibiting at the Royal Society of British Artists in 1843, continuing to exhibit there regularly until 1886. He made his debut at the Royal Academy in 1846 with a work entitled ‘A Cottage Door...

Une Bonne Tasse de Thé
Oil on canvas, signed
Image size: 23 inches x 13.75 inches
Size including frame: 35 inches x 25.75 inches
A lovely portrait of a young woman pouring a cup of tea, by Pierre Louis Bouchard. The woman is depicted wearing a green striped dress with a white apron, whilst on her head is a mob cap decorated with a red ribbon. She is shown standing before a table containing a porcelain tea service on a silver salver. She is painted with her head turned towards the viewer as she expertly pours the tea into a cup. The mode appears similar to others figures the artist painted and could well have been the same person.
Pierre Louis Bouchard was born Pierre-François Bouchard in Lyon on 2 May 1831 to Pierre Bouchard and Amelie Baron. In 1845, he began studying at the École des Beaux-Arts in Lyon where he was taught by Jean-Claude Bonnefond (1796-1860). He then moved to Paris where he became a pupil of Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824-1904) at the Ecole des beaux Arts. He also studied under Jean-Hippolyte Flandrin...

A wonderful genre painting by Charles Hunt of two men and two boys with horses and other animals in a cottage. A farmer and his two sons can be seen eating lunch at a table in rustic interior as a visitor approaches. Perhaps encouraged by the boys, a piglet seems to have found its way onto the table whilst a rabbit and guinea pig eat cabbage leaves on the floor. To the far right, a horse is shown in a stable area along with some piglets. To the far left, a terrier waits on the step by its master.

The small fishing village of Le Pouldu, located on Cap Finistère in Brittany, south of Concarneau and Pont-Aven, was nestled between the Laita River and the sea. The area was renowned for its sand dunes. A ferry operated there, transporting people and livestock across the river. In 1886, the village consisted of only 11 households and was so small it didn't even have a bakery.
In 1890, Paul Gauguin and six other artists, including Paul Sérusier, Jacob Meyer...
