Joost Verhagen (1975) was constantly drawing from a very young age. This was no surprise because drawing teachers and designers in the family encouraged him. His grandparents lived in Rotterdam. The large port made an impression on the young Joost – the skyline, ships, refineries and terminals. On A3 sheets he drew cityscapes and skylines of large, fictional metropolises with pencil. The art academy in Rotterdam was an obvious choice, but the education was not really what he had hoped for and a career in real estate followed. A desire remained. After backpacking in Australia in his youth, Joost Verhagen decided to emigrate there and work as a worker in infrastructure in the Outback for a number of years. The rugged landscapes stayed with him when he returned to Europe. He picked up pencil and paper again. Brushes too. He studied classical painting at the art academy of Antwerp (Belgium) and graduated in 2019. Joost Verhagen is now a full-time painter, based in Eindhoven (Netherlands) and his modern landscapes are sold worldwide. His art has been exhibited in the Netherlands, Belgium and India. In April 2021 he was chosen as ‘Artist of the Month’ by Online Gallery. The Eindhoven artist translates the modern landscape, in a continuous search. With his iPhone camera he searches for images that can be converted from photo to canvas. His starting point is realism. With simple tools, only brush, palette knife and mostly acrylic paint on linen, he wants to transform the image into something fascinating, surreal or alienating. Representation is paramount: the Golden Ratio is of course important, but according to Joost Verhagen this should not be the only way to achieve the end result. The artist will come to the edge of exaggeration, between realism and abstraction. In terms of color, everything is possible, from light to dark. The subject may seem grim, but it is not without hope. Images and shapes must be real, not artificial. Joost Verhagen often encounters this in deserted locations. ‘My starting point could at first sight be seen as quiet, boring or even uninspired. But it is not hopeless: things happen. Dynamism and progress are possible.’ He prefers to work on linen larger than 1 x 1 meter, pinned to the wall. Only after he has stretched the linen on a frame. This gives the freedom to revise the dimensions. Other themes are small landscape studies and portraits. These works of art also transform realism into abstraction.

The Wave, Original painting, Landscape, Contemporary
By Helen Robinson
Located in Deddington, GB
The Wave By Helen Robinson [2020] The Wave is one of a series of contemporary abstracted seascapes exploring the way light interacts with sky, earth and water. This work suggests the way light reflects on the ever-changing tidal channels which make intricate patterns through areas of saltmarsh. The use of bright colour, expressive brushmarks and tonal blending present a calm scene, with the suggestion of a white wave just below the horizon. Additional Information: original Oil on canvas board Image size: H:40 cm x W:40 cm Complete Size of Unframed Work: H:40 cm x W:40 cm x D:1cm Frame Size: H:47 cm x W:47 cm x D:4cm Sold Framed Please note that insitu images are purely an indication of how a piece may look Helen Robinson's atmospheric oil paintings represent impressionable moments in her life, mostly inspired by her love of travel and the sea. Following a career in town planning, Helen pursued her interest in art and has now been painting regularly for over 15 years. In 2013, she obtained an Honours degree in Art History when she found she was drawn mostly to artists who painted light. Influences include the 17th century Dutch landscape painters and William Turner, particularly his works. Helen's recent paintings are contemporary sea and cloudscapes which have a strong sense of light, mystery and drama. Memories and photographs of travel and sailing experiences provide the starting point for her work which then evolves in a more abstracted way. She focuses on the way light interacts with sky, earth and water - both vast expanses of sea and intricate salt marshes with their detailed patterns of water...
