About the Item

Author: José Manuel Chico Prats (Barcelona, 1916 – 2006) Title: Piazza della Signoria, Florence Date: c. 1960 Technique: Oil on canvas Dimensions: 60 × 73 cm (23.6 × 28.7 in) Signature: Signed lower right: Chico Prats Framing: Unframed Condition: Very good. Firm canvas, stable paint layer, with visible impasto and vibrant texture. Work Description: In this vibrant urban scene, José Manuel Chico Prats depicts Florence’s Piazza della Signoria, the historical and artistic heart of the city. The composition is organized around the Fountain of Neptune and the equestrian statue of Cosimo I de’ Medici, while a carriage crosses the square under a golden light that reflects off the façades of the Palazzo Vecchio. The loose, impastoed brushwork reveals the artist’s mastery of color and atmosphere: pearly blues and warm ochres blend into a lively harmony in which the architecture seems to breathe. Chico Prats does not aim for topographical accuracy, but rather for the emotion of the moment—the vibration of light upon stone. The painting conveys the Mediterranean and cosmopolitan air that defines his work, shaped by his travels through Italy and France. Artistic Commentary: The painting demonstrates Chico Prats’s technical maturity in his post-Impressionist period, in which light becomes the protagonist and the pictorial matter gains expressive value. His vision of Florence recalls the chromatic freedom of Eliseo Meifrèn, the urban lyricism of Emili Grau Sala, and the architectural balance of Ricard Urgell. In his treatment of light, his work also approaches French painters such as Camille Pissarro and Albert Marquet, with whom he shares a taste for urban scenes bathed in enveloping atmospheric clarity. Artist Biography: José Manuel Chico Prats (Barcelona, 1916 – 2006) studied at the School of Fine Arts “La Llotja” in Barcelona and at the Academy of San Carlos in Valencia. After completing his training, he travelled extensively through Paris, Italy, and London, experiences that decisively shaped his artistic language. A painter and printmaker, he received several awards in national competitions—among them, for his illustrations for Cervantes’s Rinconete y Cortadillo. His work is characterized by loose, impastoed brushwork, mastery of Mediterranean light, and attention to both architectural and human landscapes. He alternated coastal subjects from Ibiza and Mallorca—where he spent long periods—with urban scenes from his European travels.

"Pistoia Street" by Christopher Clark, Original Oil Painting, Italian Cityscape
By Christopher Clark
Located in Denver, CO
Christopher Clark's "Pistoia Street" is an original, hand made oil and acrylic painting that depicts a brightly lit city street. Christopher has been an artist since early childhood, when he would watch Bob Ross on PBS and mimic the famed oil painter’s art with crayons. He considers himself a self-educated artist, with his studies ranging from personal training with contemporary masters, to classical academic art technique, with much inspiration from 19th Century art and the Impressionist Movement. Christopher lived in Italy for a time, immersing himself in Italian culture and art, which continues to influence his painting. His fan base has grown considerably since his return to the US, gaining the attention of Lucasfilm and Marvel Fine Art, which both signed him as an officially licensed artist in 2016. Other clients include George Lucas, Major League Baseball, Louisville Slugger, and Fender Guitars. Christopher’s painting skills are not his only talent in the arts. He has won several national swing dance championship competitions, and also studies tango and blues dancing. He has played guitar since the age of 12, and during his time as lead guitarist for a rock band, he opened for Blue Oyster Cult and Eddie Money...
