About the Item

A great neoclassical painting from the second half of the 18th century. This artwork oil on canvas depicts a famous episode in the life of Alexander the Great, when, during his campaign in the East, he fell seriously ill and entrusted his care to the physician Philip of Acarnania. As he was about to drink the prescribed remedy, Alexander received an anonymous letter warning him that Philip had been bribed by his enemies and intended to poison him. The young ruler, in a gesture of heroic trust, drank the medicine while looking the physician in the eye, simultaneously handing him the letter of accusation. The moral message is that of trust between ruler and scientist, a central theme in Enlightenment culture. Surrounding the protagonists of the story is a procession of splendid Macedonian officers in armor, statuesque figures with plumed helmets and gleaming shields. A painting of remarkable pictorial quality and great compositional elegance, rich in exquisite detail and dominated by warm tones and soft chiaroscuro, in true neoclassical style. This artwork is a period replica, faithful in quality and size, of the painting currently held at the Galleria Nazionale della Pilotta in Parma. Attributed to the French painter Joseph Denasde, this composition won second prize in the 1785 Parma Academic Competition. This imposing painting is ideal for historic buildings, stately studies, and contemporary homes with a classical feel. Intended for a cultured collector, this painting features a rare, iconic subject, a perfect blend of ancient history and Enlightenment aesthetics. Scenographic 20th-century gilded wood and plaster frame, beautifully decorated, with some signs of aging. The painting has already been restored with relining, replacement of the stretcher, and repainting in small areas. Overall, it is in good condition. Internal dimensions: H 98 x W 148 cm. NOT SIGNED
