19th century Barbizon painting "The nymphs bathing in a forest landscape"
The artist wonderfully captured this dreamy scenery with vibrant colours and assured brushstrokes, inviting the spectator to step into this mystical forest.
The panel measures 45*33 cm, with the frame 54.5*43.5cm.
Signed lower right. The signature is very faint after the J. C, but we think to read Coignet.
Jules Louis Philippe Coignet (1798–1860) was a French landscape painter, draughtsman, and lithographer born and active in Paris. A student of the influential neoclassical landscapist Jean-Victor Bertin, he began his career within the tradition of idealized, “historical” landscape painting. However, Coignet soon moved toward a more naturalistic approach, becoming one of the early French artists to paint directly from nature. His plein-air studies focused on the truthful rendering of light, atmosphere, and topography, anticipating the concerns of the Barbizon School.
Throughout his career, Coignet travelled extensively; across France, the Alps, Italy and Sicily, as well as to Egypt, Lebanon, and Syria. These journeys provided a rich variety of subjects, which he captured in oils, watercolours, pastels, and lithographs. He exhibited regularly at the Paris Salon from 1824 to 1857 and won a gold medal early in his career.
