About the Item
Baroque, Rocco style portrait of a married couple in red attire
"1720," a painting from the Matrimony Series by Lauren Hamilton, completed in 2023
oil on canvas
72 x 72 inches
This painting is the third in a series of double portraits by the artist Lauren Hamilton. She paints married couples at various points in history; the Matrimony Series comprises paintings set in 1520, 1620, 1720, 1820, 1920 and 2020. Using her own likeness as the reference for the characters she creates – men as well as women – Hamilton paints pictures that are full of humor, nuance, and narrative complexity. These eras are reflected most obviously in the attire and posture of its subjects. In this large painting, "1720," Hamilton depicts a woman sitting demurely, looking directly at the viewer, as her husband makes a flamboyant gesture while facing away. They are both dressed in ornate red garments. The wallpaper and rug amplify the visual impact of the picture with intricate designs in understated tints of blue.
Artist Statement:
The Matrimony Series is an exploration of self-portrait and performance, gender identity , and the power dynamics within the institution of marriage throughout the ages. By inhabiting the personas of both spouses in the traditional hetero normative state of matrimony , first through performance and costume, then through the extensive rendering of those personas on canvas, the artist is questioning and examining that state throughout various eras. The internal state of the subject is expressed visually by means of figurative portraiture . The eras depicted are also defined with composition, color, and the physicality of the subject . The relationship of the spouses to one another also reflects a given time period, and what the power dynamics may have been at play in these periods.
More questions are asked than answers given. Who has the upper hand? In which periods was a wife considered property of a husband? is there an equanimity or harmony achieved for any of them ? Is it a greater burden to take on the prescribed “husband “ gender role of the time, or that of the “wife”? The idea is to generate thought about these issues and how they have progressed or regressed with time, and to what degree are we still compelled to respond to these influences?
About the artist:
