Maurice Milliere (1871-1946) An artist in his studio, oil on canvas signed
By Maurice Milliere
Located in Paris, FR
Maurice Milliere (1871-1946) An artist in his studio, signed lower right oil on canvas 46 x 27 cm framed : 52 x 33 cm It is particularly interesting to find Maurice Millière working in a genre very different from that for which he is best known: depictions of young Parisian women. This unique portrait shows Millière in a more original and intriguing light. It captures a painter in his studio, creating a scene with various details: canvases on the floor to the right, a stretcher frame on trestles and even shoes that must have been quite striking at the time. The painter appears to be taking a break to smoke and pose for Millière. There is a real sense of complicity between the two artists. At the same time, however, everything in this painting is carefully chosen and composed, such as the admirable red background against which the model stands out. Combining elements of both a portrait and a studio scene, the painter's intention was to create a unique piece that pays homage to the bond between the two artists. Maurice Georges Louis Millière was born in Le Havre in 187. He came from a working-class family in Le Havre; his father was a salesman for a merchant. Millière began by studying painting at the École des Beaux-Arts in Le Havre. He moved to Paris in 1889 and enrolled at the École des Arts Décoratifs, also attending certain workshops at the École des Beaux-Arts. His first notable graphic works were posters and sheet music for companies such as Le Boulch and Le Divan Japonais (1899). From 1917 onwards, he published large numbers of depictions of scantily clad women: first in Fantasio (1917), then in Bagatelles, La Vie parisienne, Le Frou-frou, Le Sourire, Le Gai-Paris, etc. At the end of 1920, he joined the République de Montmartre, a charitable association. Contemporary with those of Louis Icart, his “little women” were to enjoy great success outside France: during the 1920s, American periodicals reprinted his creations, as well as those of Suzanne Meunier and Georges Léonnec...

Barbizon School, Fontainebleau landscape with walkers, oil on canvas
Located in Paris, FR
Barbizon School, French circa 1850 Fontainebleau landscape with walkers Oil on canvas 21.5 x 31 cm Framed : 32 x 41.5 cm In good condition, some minor lacks of paintingsdue to a former frame abrasion mainly on the right border and in the lower border (see photographs please) This landscape is probably a view of the Fontainebleau forest. This type of scene was painted by the Barbizon painters and by Camille Corot. The village of Barbizon is very close to the forest of Fontainebleau and the painters who lived there, such as Camille Corot, painted the most picturesque views of the spectacular stone quarries. There were also many walkers and hikers in these places, as the artists had made them famous and fashionable. The author of this charming little painting wanted to depict the wildness of the place and, in contrast, the walkers who made it a pittoresque curiosity. Although it's difficult to identify or ascribe the work, as there's no signature or other indication, there's a great deal of sensitivity and self-confidence in a very lively touch that heralds Impressionism. The detail of the barely sketched silhouettes...

Léon Frédéric (1856-1940) The Dunes and the Sea, oil signed
By Léon Frédéric
Located in Paris, FR
Léon Frédéric (1856-1940) The Dunes and the Sea, signed at the lower right Oil on canvas transfered on woodpanel 30 x 40 cm Framed : 42 x 53 cm in good condition, Léon Frédéric always presented his oil landscapes on canvas transferred onto mahogany panels like this one. This seascape and dunes by Léon Frédéric is part of a series of landscapes inspired by the shores of Heyst, near the Belgian coastal resort of Knokke. Although he found much inspiration in the rolling landscapes of the Ardennes, particularly in the area of Nafraiture, at the other end of the country, the North Sea offered him a completely different motif and an opportunity to explore another source of inspiration. His style may seem lighter in some ways, but the same energy is evident in the way he depicts the vegetation in the foreground, for example, with the dunes reminiscent of the hills and valleys he loved. Similarly, his approach to composition is characteristic of his art, with a very high horizon line that seems to raise the viewer's gaze. Finally, this work exudes a great serenity that invites contemplation. Léon Frédéric was born on 26 August 1856 in Brussels and died on 25 January 1940 in Schaerbeek. The son of a prosperous jeweller, Léon Frédéric was apprenticed to the painter-decorator Charle-Albert in 1871, and attended evening classes at the Brussels Academy. In 1874, he worked in the private studio of Jean-François Portaels. The following year, he joined forces with a group of young painters to rent a studio where they could study live models. From 1876 to 1878, he prepared for the Prix de Rome, which he failed, but his father offered him a year's travel to Italy. From 1878 to 1879, he made his debut with the artistic group l'Essor, which brought together proponents of realism. In 1883, he was hailed as a promising painter with his painting Les Marchands de craie, a triptych combining modernism with the genius of the primitive masters, and in the 1890s he became one of the most popular painters in Belgium, cited alongside Constantin Meunier and Eugène Laermans. On 24 April 1929, King Albert I awarded Léon Frédéric - at the same time as James Ensor - the title of Baron. In 1882, he discovered the work of the French naturalist painter Jules Bastien Lepage...
