Dancing is a metaphor for living. As long as you keep dancing, you're alive. I remember seeing something like "I'm dancing as fast as I can" or "I'm running as fast as I can" There are all of these metaphors for end of life experiences. The danger of being old, an old artist especially, is disappearing. It's becoming invisible. People don't know you're around anymore, they forget you. I'm very fortunate that people are still noticing me. - Leopold Segedin.
Leopold Segedin, who passed away in January, 2025 at the age of 97, painted self portraits for more than 75 years. From the handsome young man in the 1940s to the portrayal of himself as he aged over the decades, Segedin did it not because he was a "cheap model" but as a method of self-investigation and a personal memoir. Here in "Old Men Dancing", Segedin portrays himself not once but four times on the "L" train platform in his beloved Chicago. It is floated on a cream colored matte and floated in a blond wooden frame measuring 33h x 45w x 2d inches.
