Louis Cretey, formerly known as Pierre-Louis Cretey (c.1635, in Lyon - after 1702), was a French baroque painter and one of the leading masters in the Lyonnaise school. He was active both in Italy, mainly in Rome, Modena and Parma, and in France, where he spent most of his subsequent career.
Sebastian was a captain of the Praetorian Guard at the imperial court who publicly professed his faith in Christianity, whereupon Diocletian sentenced him to death and had him shot by archers. The painting depicts the slender, half-naked Sebastian, clothed only in a white cloth around his hips, while a soldier ties his feet to a large tree. On the ground in front of the saint lies a quiver of arrows with which he is to be killed. In the lower left corner are the armour and red cloak of the condemned man, above which is a path leading to the sunlit city under a high sky. High-quality painting of a motif popular at the time.
