About the Item
Oil on Canvas. Signed and dated lower left on left side canvas.
The large composition consists of three separate canvases, the central one of which is vertically developed (size 220 x 128 cm) and rounded at the upper margin, the two lateral developed horizontally and shaped at the corners (dimensions 150 x 328 cm).
The central canvas is dominated by the figure of Venus, who erupts naked from the foam of the sea, with one arm raised to cover her eyes to protect herself from the dawn light; on the two side canvases, a host of tritons, sirens, sea nymphs, and sea monsters, led by the god Poseidon, recognizable on the left by the trident he holds, witness the event with awe and joyful jubilation.
Figures stand out against the background of sea and sky, merged in a luminous continuum of gradations of the color blue, into which the rosy light of dawn creeps, illuminating the scene.
Trained in the school of Cesare Tallone, Brignoli learned from him naturalism derived from the Venetian tradition, observation of nature, decisive brushwork, strong contrasts of light.
Pealtro, after several trips to Africa, which began in 1922, Brignoli approached painting orientalist, but eschewed exotic forms of rhetoric, to rather revive the new subject with a 'careful search for colors and lighting effects on the landscape.
This work, belonging to the artist's already "African" period, is affected by this imprint in its bright and clear color choices.
Because of its size and the composition of the three canvases, it is of great scenic impact: coming from a large Brescian villa, where it was displayed on the imposing staircase, it was probably specially conceived and created as a custom-made decorative element.
The canvases are presented in coeval gilded frames, missing some parts.
