About the Item
As a gallerist, few moments are as rewarding as introducing collectors to an artist whose work speaks so profoundly to our shared human experience. Maria José Chica’s paintings do exactly that. Her practice is more than visual—it's archeological, emotional, and cultural. Each piece is a layered excavation, fusing natural pigments from Colombian landscapes with archival imagery that tells stories of migration, memory, and identity.
What makes Chica’s work compelling for collectors is its rare ability to bridge aesthetic beauty with intellectual depth. Her art doesn't merely decorate a space—it activates it. Owning one of her pieces means owning a conversation between past and present, between land and lineage. These are works that evolve in meaning over time, much like the identities they reflect.
Maria José Chica is part of a growing movement of Latin American artists redefining contemporary painting through materials rooted in place and narratives rooted in lived experience. Her work resonates on both a personal and universal level, offering collectors not just a window into her world, but a mirror to their own.
This is the moment to invest in an artist whose voice is both timely and timeless.

María José Chica was born and continues to base her practice in Bogotá, Colombia. Her work unites geology, archaeology and art, drawing parallels between the layers of the Earth and the history of human existence. A meditation on the physical and conceptual accumulation of time, it reveals the interconnectedness between past, present and future. Her work has come to incorporate natural pigments from soils and minerals collected from diverse geographies, reflecting a reverence for the natural world, as well as resonating with the spirit of place and the immensity of geological time.Chica earned her BFA from the National University of Colombia, Bogotá, Colombia, and her MFA from Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, London, UK. She has exhibited with institutions internationally, including the Material Art Fair in Mexico City, the Untitled Art Fair in Miami, and Gallería el Museo inBogotá, among others.
