About the Item

Animated cartoon comic--like portrait oil painting on paper by Matt Straub. Signed on back by artist. Offered framed. Paper size: 7 x 6 inches Frame size: 11 x 9 inches. Matt Straub's subjects are derived from various sources: snapshots, found images, auction catalogs containing 19th-century genre paintings, actor headshots, and portraits he photographed in the studio. His agitated surfaces degrade and obscure the original reference, replacing it with a sublime and resonating nostalgia. Straub maintains a careful approach to a tradition of painting, an unsentimental contemplation. Using a subdued palette with simplified tonalities, his wet-on-wet brushwork describes details, employing trial and error rather than improvisation. The work merges the representational (inward contemplation) and the abstract (outward appearance of the surface). The image is not a rendering of the subject's gaze but is mainly concerned with the real pictorial space of the surface. Yet it is a surface always tied to the figure and a sense of facts and the presentation of self. portrait, pop art, animation, earth tones, oil painting, portrait painting, contemporary art, work on paper, figurative art, figure painting

Portrait of a Man
By David Sharpe
Located in Brooklyn, NY
David Sharpe, second-generation Chicago Imagist — 1991 figurative portrait, graphite on paper. A psychologically charged head-and-shoulders portrait rendered entirely in graphite, emphasizing Sharpe’s incisive draftsmanship. Without color, the image leans on tonal shifts, cross-hatching, and faceted marks to build a mask-like visage that oscillates between observation and invention—classic post-Imagist Chicago: bold figuration, surreal inflection, and emotional intensity. Dated 1991, this work embodies the Chicago school’s distinctive blend of wit and bite while remaining intimately drawn and friendly in scale. Institutional collections (selection): Art Institute of Chicago; Museum of Contemporary Art Chicago; Smart Museum of Art, University of Chicago; Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art; Mary & Leigh Block...

Self Portrait #1, colorful gestural abstracted portrait
By Tom Bennett
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Oil on paper About Tom Bennett: With quick brushstrokes, Tom Bennett creates representational images of human figures and animals, emphasizing movement in a manner reminiscent of Lucien Freud, Edgar Degas and the photographer Eadweard Muybridge. Elongated and blurry, the horse racing up a hill (Canter Fritz, 2002) and the sinister cat landing a leap (Chien Blanc, 1998) elicit a sense of foreboding enhanced by Bennett’s somber palette; his female figures too reflect a grim sense of humor with their distorted nude bodies. The face of Untitled Figure (1997), for example, is obscured by layers of dark paint. Classically trained as a painter, he initially worked in oil on canvas but discovered that monotype printing enabled him to “literally push the image around,” creating an essential element of motion. To overcome the limited scale of monotypes, however, he switched to painting on slick-surfaced plastic. Tom Bennett’s practice is rooted in the classical tradition where painting and drawing from life is highly regarded. Bennett’s work is heavily influenced by Francis Bacon, Frank Auberbauch and foremost his father, Harry Bennett, who was also an artist. Tom’s time living abroad in Spain and traveling through Eastern Europe and Africa provided the artistic freedom to explore many of the techniques and subject matter that continue to define his practice. Bennett was born and raised in Connecticut. His mediums include monotypes, oil on paper, canvas or styrene board. In a technique that Tom started over 4 years ago, several of his monotypes have been painted over with oil paint using a palette knife, brush, or his fingers to re-purpose the underlying image. These works are a testament to Bennett’s ability to quickly and concisely compose an image with expressive brush strokes, foreshortened figures and expertly rendered light. Tom’s work has been featured in group and solo exhibitions worldwide. Bennett lives and works in Brooklyn, New York. He is currently represented by Tabla Rasa...
