About the Item

Maurice Brevannes (1901-1976) Man Seated on Front Porch, ca. 1930's. Ink on paper. Image measuring 13 x 18 inches on a sheet measuring 15 x 19 inches. Taped to matting board. Signed lower left. Unframed. Brevannes creates a landscape in the Regionalist style with man sitting on the front porch of his cabin. Either a dead tree or leafless winter tree hovers over the house. In the foreground is a cut stump and a cow in profile. Perhaps this is the man's only companion. The image communicates a strong sense of solitude mixed with loneliness. Created during the 1930's the image seems to be influenced by the work of Thomas Hart Benton as well as early 20th century German Expressionist painting. The brushwork is thick, muscular and confident. Not much is known about this artist. It is believed that he was born in France or Canada, having immigrated to New York with his family at an early age. Because nothing is known about his education, he is regarded as a self-taught artist. He did occasional illustrations for books from about 1931 to 1956, but also painted extensively to the end of his life. During the thirties he did get some recognition for modernist interior and figure subjects, especially of working people. He did not paint for the WPA, but eked out a living with private sales, augmented by exhibitions with the Society of Independent Artists for about ten years from 1934. Although he lived most of his life in Jackson Heights, Long Island, NY, he spent his last years in Westport and Saugatuck, Connecticut. He is listed in Who Was Who in American Art and other art reference books.
