About the Item
If paintings could glitch, they might look like Michael Dotson’s psychedelic canvases, which seem plucked from cyberspace. Dotson is known for depictions of nostalgic icons like characters from Disney films that he translates into the language of digital media. His paintings portray familiar fairytale personas in what appear to be virtual spaces that he renders with vaporwave palettes. These hypnotic settings evolved out of Dotson’s earlier acrylic paintings of architectural spaces. Recalling the built environments of video games, they reflect his long interest in replicating computer-simulated environments. Dotson received his BFA from the Cleveland Institute of Art in 2006 and his MFA from American University in 2011. He resides in Brooklyn, where he continues to recreate Disney imagery by sourcing screenshots of classic movies.
