About the Item
Michel Debiève was born on May 29, 1931, with his twin brother Raymond, in a popular suburb of Maubeuge (North of France). Very early, encouraged by Emile, their father, the two brothers created with pencils, learning the lines on the paper or the tiles of the kitchen. The war disrupted the life of the family: Emile died and the twins were separated. In 1944, Madeleine, the mother, remarries with Lucien Henneuse, who offers them their first box of paint, their easels and pallets. Later came studies at the Beaux-Arts in Valenciennes, on the recommendation of the painter Charles Bétrémieux, where their work was quickly noticed and rewarded: Raymond and Michel got awards each year. At home, Lucien transforms a room into a workshop for the two brothers, installs a forge in the garage: Raymond and Michel sculpt metal, enamel, create jewels, learn to modeling in the earth. In 1953, the two young artists enter the studio of the glass-painter Paul Ducatez, and are in close contact with the Abbé Mériaux, visionary priest attentive to the movement of Arts and Popular Traditions and founder of the Glass Museum of Sars-Poteries . For two years, they will mainly make stained glass windows for the surrounding churches. The sixties see the dissociation of twins, everyone will then conduct his work alone: Michel in Nantes, Raymond in Provence.
