A Compelling, Post War Chicago Subway Scene by 20th Century Urban Realist Artist, Milan Kouba (American, b. 1947). Oil on canvas, dating from 1976. Signed lower right. Signed and dated (twice) on reverse. Artwork size: 14 x 11 inches; Framed size: 14 1/2 x 11 1/2 inches.
Milan Kouba was born in Czechoslovakia in 1947. He was a displaced person who immigrated to the United States during the Cold War with his family as a child in 1954. He studied art in both Czechoslovakia and Germany, and continued to paint independently while a resident of Chicago, IL. Kouba is best recognized for his Urban Realist paintings, often painting city nocturnes and street scenes, typically showing the long shadows and raking lights cast by bridges, viaducts and El tracks of downtown Chicago.
