Acquired by descent from the artist to the present owner
Milton Derr was a painter, illustrator, and educator. Derr was born in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, in 1932. He attended the Independent Group of Painters and Sculptors in Tokyo, Japan, the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston, and the Layton School of Art in Milwaukee. Numerous exhibitions have included him, including some supported by the Federal Reserve Bank of Boston, the Museum of the National Center of Afro-American Artists, the Boston Museum of Fine Arts, the Studio Museum of Harlem, and Northeastern University's African-American Master Artists in Residency Program. He was a member of the US Air Force during the Korean War. Derr began teaching at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in 1964.
He has also instructed at Tufts University. Derr identifies as a figurative painter, with a style positioned between expressionism and impressionism. He is recognized among the blackstream artists from the 1960s and 1970s because, despite featuring black subjects in some of his pieces, he aims to universalize the black experience by concentrating on themes that go beyond race and utilizing widely recognized modern art methods rooted in the European tradition.
