Faustini Modesto. Brescia, 27 maggio 1839 - Roma, 23 marzo 1891.
Born in Brescia in 1839, Modesto Faustini was orphaned at the age of six and was moved into an orphanage where he received vocational training as a dressmaker. In 1855 his aptitude for design was recognized and he was allowed to enter the School of Drawing . In 1861 with a small stipend , the young artist enrolled in the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Milan, where he studied under the tutelage of Giuseppe Bertini. He worked at night making illustrations for magazines and newspapers in order to subsidize his stipende to continue his studies.
After a move to Rome and his introduction at the artists Nino Costa, Faustini ‘s art began to demostrate the influence of the Pre-Raphaelite movement, culminating in the decorations for the Santuario delle S. Maria delle Grazie in his native Brescia. He was particulary noted for portraying scenes of Roman life and particulary that of the denizens of Pompeii which were so popular in the second half of the 19th century throughout Europe.
The present painting, demostrate a remarkable sensititvity to color and light.

Pio Joris attended the Istituto di Belle Arti in Rome and in 1861 he enrolled at the Accademia di San Luca, where he remained for just a year. On a visit to the 1st Esposizione Nazionale di Belle Arti of Florence in 1861 he was attracted by the naturalistic works from the Naples school. He came into contact with Domenico Morelli and Filippo Palizzi during a trip to Capri, Sorrento and Naples in 1866. In Rome, he kept company with Mariano Fortuny, whose painting, with its pleasant, captivating luministic effects, made a very strong impression on Joris. A Classic romantic movement oil painting on wood panel depicting two lovers. They are dressed in Renaissance almost theatrical garments and they sit intimately close to one another on a bench. The atmospheric background is set in the middle of a wooded park in the early evening hours before dusk. Their faces are almost in shadow as the brilliant orange/red sun sets behind them. The painting is signed F. Heilbuth on the right hand bottom corner of the canvas and is dated ’76 in reference to 1876. It is set in a gold painted wood frame.
Biography
Ferdinand Heilbuth, (1826-1889), was a German-born French painter. He was born in Hamburg in 1826, and died in Paris in 1889 having become a French citizen in 1876, the same year he painted this work. He is buried in Père-Lachaise cemetery in Paris.
This genre painter whose talent has the characteristics of nobility, liveliness of color and accent in expression, exhibited many times at the Royal Academy in London. His works were also shown in the Grosvenor Gallery...
