About the Item

"Between Objects" by French artist Natalya Mougenot is a contemporary figurative painting that transforms familiar domestic elements into quiet, poetic presences. Through a bold yet intuitive visual language, Mougenot explores the emotional resonance carried by everyday objects. As the artist notes, “I am interested in what remains when people are absent — the objects that quietly hold our stories.” The composition centers on a simple wooden chair and a turquoise vase filled with stylized floral forms, set against a soft, atmospheric gray ground. Reduced to their essential shapes, the objects are rendered in warm ochres, deep greens, and vibrant teal tones. Thick, visible brushstrokes and a slightly unstable perspective lend the scene a tactile, lived-in quality, evoking memory, use, and the passage of time. “I don’t try to correct the wobble,” Mougenot explains. “It’s part of how memory works — never perfectly straight.” The muted background functions as a quiet stage, allowing the colors to vibrate while establishing a contemplative mood. Negative space plays a central role, emphasizing relationships rather than isolation. “What interests me most is the space between things,” the artist says. “That silent distance where emotion settles.” Mougenot’s style blends post-impressionist color sensibilities with the immediacy of expressive drawing. Her deliberately unrefined brushwork leaves drips, overlaps, and edges visible, privileging authenticity of gesture over polish. “I want the hand to remain visible,” she states. “If the painting looks too perfect, it loses its truth.” A restrained palette gives the work strong graphic clarity, while the simplified, rounded floral forms hover between figuration and symbol. Conceptually, "Between Objects" reflects the artist’s ongoing exploration of how humans project emotions and narratives onto their surroundings. The empty chair suggests absence or anticipation, while the carefully placed vase introduces a gesture of care and domestic ritual. “Objects become emotional substitutes,” Mougenot notes. “They wait, they remember, they witness.” Created through an intuitive and spontaneous process, the painting embraces imperfection, visible revisions, and accidental marks as integral parts of the composition. “I let the painting decide when it is finished,” the artist explains. “I stop when it still feels alive.” Oscillating between abstraction and figuration, simplicity and emotional depth, "Between Objects" embodies a contemporary metamodern sensibility. By treating ordinary objects with quiet seriousness, Mougenot reveals the poetic potential of the everyday, offering a work that is both visually striking and conceptually resonant — one that invites viewers to slow down and feel the presence of wArtwork Details: Size: 50 x 65 cm (19,7 x 25,6 inches) Medium: Acrylic painting on heavyweight, professional acid-free paper Finish: Sealed with protective varnish Framing: Unframed (standard size for easy framing) Images of the painting framed in the interior are for your inspiration only Shipping: Carefully packaged and shipped flat Signed on the front and on the back About Natalya: Originally from Pavlodar, Kazakhstan, and now based in Lyon, France, Natalya Mougenot has spent over two decades refining her artistic voice.
