About the Item

“Flamingo Between Us” is a contemporary figurative painting created by French artist Natalya Mougenot as part of her ongoing Women series, a body of work she has been developing over recent years around the themes of authentic connection, emotional unity, and shared presence. The composition presents two women standing side by side, facing the viewer. Their faces are intentionally left without features — a conscious artistic choice that removes social roles, expectations, and fixed identities. By doing so, Mougenot shifts the focus away from appearance and toward what is essential: the relationship itself. These women are not defined by who they are, but by what exists between them. “Authenticity begins when we stop performing,” Mougenot explains. “In life, as in art, truth appears when we allow ourselves to be simply present.” The figures stand close, their bodies aligned in quiet harmony. Their proximity speaks of trust, mutual support, and emotional safety. They may be sisters, friends, or a mother and daughter — the painting deliberately leaves space for interpretation, inviting viewers to project their own experiences of meaningful connection. Between them stands a flamingo, occupying the central space of the composition. Far from being a decorative or exotic element, the bird functions as a symbol of unity and authentic bond. Positioned neither with one woman nor the other, the flamingo belongs to both. It becomes a living metaphor for the invisible thread that links them — a shared emotional ground sustained by honesty and presence. “A true bond exists only when it is sincere,” the artist notes. “Without honesty, there is no real connection.” Known for its balance and social nature, the flamingo embodies a form of connection that is fragile yet resilient — one that requires attention, respect, and reciprocity. It does not impose itself; it exists naturally in the space between the two women, just as genuine relationships do. Color plays a central emotional role. Warm ochres and soft pinks convey tenderness and openness, while purples and muted blues introduce calm and introspection. The flamingo’s vibrant hues visually link the two figures, reinforcing the idea that they are part of the same emotional ecosystem. “Color is not decoration,” says Mougenot. “It is emotion, vibration, and truth.” True to her intuitive practice, Mougenot paints without preparatory sketches, working in a single uninterrupted session. The visible brushstrokes preserve immediacy and sincerity, rejecting artifice in favor of lived emotion: “A canvas always reveals the truth of the artist. You cannot hide behind technique. People feel when something is real.” From a metamodern perspective, Flamingo Between Us balances awareness and sincerity, symbolism and emotional clarity. Mougenot has consciously returned to this theme over recent years, driven by her belief that authentic unity, mutual support, and emotional honesty are urgently needed in our contemporary world, where true connection is often replaced by surface communication and isolation. “We live in a time where people are connected, but not always united,” she reflects. “My work is about remembering what real presence feels like.” Firmly rejecting the idea of painting as mere decoration, Mougenot views art as a lived companion: “People live with art. What matters to me is that what hangs on their walls carries truth, calm, and supportive energy.” Flamingo Between Us opens a contemplative space around authenticity — in relationships, in self-connection, and in art itself. Rooted in a contemporary metamodern sensibility, the painting offers a timeless and grounding presence: a quiet reminder that genuine bonds are built on honesty, shared presence, and the courage to remain true — together.
