An expressive and vividly abstract work, this oil on canvas by Nafir Boaba depicts reclining nudes set within a landscape of bold, layered colour planes in whites,pinks, greens and purples. Executed in Boaba’s signature naïve-modernist style, the composition balances flattened forms, playful abstraction, and harmonious colour contrasts, conveying both emotion and visual rhythm with striking simplicity.
Born in Reșița, Romania, in 1929, Boaba went into political exile in 1950 and settled in Paris, where he painted continuously until 2006. Throughout his prolific career, he produced hundreds of paintings, ceramics, and lithographs, exhibiting widely across Europe and Canada. From 1986 onward, he lived and worked in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye in the Isère region of France, where the Nafir gallery and workshop continue to preserve and display his extensive body of work.
Boaba’s style is at once modern and naïve, characterized by bold, unmodulated colour, simplified forms, and a playful yet sophisticated approach to composition. This abstract nude landscape exemplifies his unique vision, transforming the figure and environment into a vivid, dynamic interplay of shape and hue.
