Concubines is a dynamic and vividly expressive painting by Nafir Boaba (born 1929), executed in oil on canvas and signed, indistinctly inscribed, and dated “BOABA NAFIR 83” in the lower left. Measuring 50.3 x 65 cm, the work comes directly from the estate of the artist. The composition depicts two abstracted top-half nudes interwoven with stylised leaves, flowers, and decorative elements, all set against a fragmented, colour-rich background. The bold, playful handling of form and pattern creates a rhythmically vibrant surface, balancing naïve charm with modernist abstraction.
Born in 1929 in Reșița, near Timișoara, Romania, Nafir Boaba went into political exile in 1950, settling in Paris, where he worked continuously until 2006. He was prolific across painting, ceramics, and lithography, holding some sixty exhibitions in Europe and Canada. Deeply inspired by contemporary, primitive, and naïve art, Boaba developed a highly personal modernist language, characterized by expressive colour, primal form, and a sense of lyrical freedom. From 1986 onward, he restored a medieval house in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye, Isère, which served as his studio and home, now preserving hundreds of his creations.
Concubines exemplifies Boaba’s signature approach: abstracted figurative forms intermingled with decorative motifs and vibrant, fragmented colour. The painting combines visual complexity, emotional immediacy, and a joyous sense of rhythm, making it a compelling example of his mature style and a striking addition to any collection.
