An expressive and boldly simplified work, Duduia exemplifies Nafir Boaba’s distinctive modern-naïve style. Executed in oil on canvas in 1987, the painting is signed, inscribed, and dated in the lower right: “DUDUIA BOABA NAFIR 87.” Measuring 28 3/4 x 19 3/4 inches (73 x 50 cm), the composition is characterized by flattened forms, vibrant unmodulated colour planes, and a playful yet sophisticated energy, reflecting Boaba’s lifelong fascination with naïve and outsider art.
Born in 1929 in Reșița, near Timișoara, Romania, Boaba entered political exile in 1950, eventually settling in Paris, where he painted continuously until 2006. Over his prolific career, he produced an immense body of work—including paintings, ceramics, and lithographs—and exhibited widely across Europe and Canada in some sixty shows. In 1986, he purchased and restored a medieval house in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye in the Isère region of France, where he continued his artistic practice and where the Nafir gallery and workshop still house hundreds of his creations.
Boaba’s style is resolutely modern yet deeply primal, merging naïve charm with the expressive boldness reminiscent of early 20th-century modernists. His work reflects a profound creative inspiration and a harmony that aligns with primitive, outsider, and naïve traditions. Duduia, from the artist’s estate, is a compelling example of this approach: a vivid, playful, and uniquely personal vision that captures both emotion and form with clarity and confidence.
