Nafir Boaba’s Femme aux Flori is an intimate and lyrical composition, executed in oil on canvas in 1980. Signed, inscribed, and dated in the upper middle “BOABA NAFIR 80 FEMME,” the painting measures 25 1/2 x 19 3/4 inches (64.8 x 50 cm). The work depicts a female figure set against a softly layered cream and purple background. Simplified, flattened forms and abstracted shapes create a harmonious, mosaic-like surface, allowing the subtle interplay of colour and rhythm to convey emotion and presence with clarity.
Born in Reșița, Romania, in 1929, Boaba went into political exile in 1950 and settled in Paris, where he painted continuously until 2006. Over his prolific career, he produced hundreds of paintings, ceramics, and lithographs, exhibiting in approximately sixty exhibitions across Europe and Canada. From 1986 onward, he lived and worked in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye in the Isère region of France, where the Nafir gallery and workshop continue to preserve his extensive body of work.
Boaba’s style is modern yet rooted in naïve and outsider traditions, combining flattened perspectives, bold colour planes, and intuitive abstraction. Femme aux Flori, from the artist’s estate, exemplifies his sensitive and poetic approach to the human figure, transforming a familiar motif into a tranquil and expressive composition.
