Femme aux Flori is a vivid and expressive painting by Nafir Boaba (born 1929), executed in oil on canvas and signed, inscribed, and dated “BOABA NAFIR 80 FEMME” in the upper middle. Measuring 64.8 x 50 cm, the work comes directly from the estate of the artist. The composition presents an abstracted female figure rendered in a deliberately naïve, almost Picassoesque manner, with bold simplifications of form and a palette dominated by purples and soft whites. The result is a work of striking immediacy, balancing spontaneity with a strong internal rhythm.
Born in 1929 in Reșița, near Timișoara, Romania, Nafir Boaba went into political exile in 1950 and settled in Paris, where he began an uninterrupted period of artistic production that continued until 2006. Working across painting, ceramics, and lithography, he held some sixty exhibitions throughout Europe and Canada. Deeply engaged with contemporary, primitive, and naïve art, Boaba developed a resolutely modern visual language rooted in instinct, expressive form, and primal symbolism.
From 1986 onward, Boaba restored and worked from a medieval house in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye, in the Isère region of France, which became both his home and creative centre. His output was immense and continuous, with his ceramics—produced in significant number—often regarded as the pinnacle of his artistic achievement for their raw energy and expressive power. Today, the Nafir gallery and workshop in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye still house hundreds of his works, bearing witness to an oeuvre defined by originality, intensity, and a profound constitutive harmony. Femme aux Flori is a compelling example of his painted work, embodying the naïve and expressive spirit at the heart of his practice.
