Nafir Boaba’s Spaniola is an expressive and intimate composition, executed in oil on canvas in 1988. Signed, inscribed, and dated in the lower middle “SPANIOLA BOABA NAFIR 88,” the painting measures 24 x 18 inches (61 x 46 cm). The work depicts the upper half of a nude figure, rendered through Boaba’s distinctive language of simplified, flattened forms. The figure is set against a vibrant background of strong pinks and orange, arranged in patch-like areas that create a rhythmic, almost mosaic-like surface. These bold colour fields heighten the emotional intensity of the composition, allowing colour and structure to take precedence over anatomical precision.
Born in Reșița, Romania, in 1929, Boaba went into political exile in 1950 and settled in Paris, where he painted continuously until 2006. Over the course of his prolific career, he produced hundreds of paintings, ceramics, and lithographs, exhibiting in approximately sixty exhibitions across Europe and Canada. From 1986 onward, he lived and worked in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye in the Isère region of France, where the Nafir gallery and workshop continue to safeguard his extensive body of work.
Boaba’s work is resolutely modern while drawing deeply from naïve and outsider traditions. His use of bold, unmodulated colour, intuitive abstraction, and flattened perspective conveys emotion with clarity and immediacy. Spaniola, from the artist’s estate, exemplifies his vibrant and expressive approach to the human figure, transforming the nude into a powerful study of colour, form, and atmosphere
