Nafir Boaba’s Venus is a striking 3/4-length nude, executed in oil on canvas in 1982. Signed, indistinctly inscribed, and dated in the lower right “BOABA NAFIR 82,” the painting measures 25 1/2 x 18 inches (64.8 x 46 cm). The figure is rendered in Boaba’s signature naïve style, with simplified, flattened forms that emphasize presence and rhythm over anatomical detail. Set against a vivid light green background, the composition creates a bold contrast, allowing the figure to emerge with clarity and immediacy. The work exemplifies Boaba’s playful modernist approach, balancing abstraction and figurative representation with expressive colour and form.
Born in Reșița, Romania, in 1929, Boaba went into political exile in 1950 and settled in Paris, where he painted continuously until 2006. Over his prolific career, he produced hundreds of paintings, ceramics, and lithographs, exhibiting in approximately sixty exhibitions across Europe and Canada. From 1986 onward, he lived and worked in Saint-Antoine-l’Abbaye in the Isère region of France, where the Nafir gallery and workshop continue to preserve his extensive body of work.
Boaba’s style is modern yet deeply rooted in naïve and outsider traditions. His use of bold colour planes, flattened perspective, and intuitive abstraction conveys emotion with immediacy and clarity. Venus, from the artist’s estate, exemplifies his ability to transform the human figure into a vivid and expressive study of form, colour, and presence.
