About the Item
Otto Pilny was a Swiss Orientalist painter working at the turn of the 20th century. Specializing in exoticized oil paintings of the Middle East, his work often features desert scenes and tableaux of Bedouin men and dancing women. Born on June 28, 1866 in the Czech Republic, he studied in Prague before living in Vienna and ultimately settling in Zürich. He first visited Egypt in 1875, where he remained for two years, traveling with the nomadic Bedouin tribes and painting scenes of evening entertainment. In 1889, he visited again and was this time was decorated with the order of the Medjidie, a knightly honor, by the King of Egypt, Abbas II. He died in Zürich, Switzerland on July 22, 1936.
The French Society of Orientalist Painters was founded in 1893, with Jean-Léon Gérôme as the honorary president.
The formation of the French Orientalist Painters Society changed the consciousness of practitioners towards the end of the 19th century, since artists could now see themselves as part of a distinct art movement. As an art movement, Orientalist painting is generally treated as one of the many branches of 19th-century academic art; however, many different styles of Orientalist art were in evidence. Art historians tend to identify two broad types of Orientalist artist: the realists who carefully painted what they observed such as Gustav Bauernfeint; and those who imagined Orientalist scenes without ever leaving the studio. French painters such as Eugène Delacroix (1798–1863) and Jean-Léon Gérôme (1824–1904) are widely regarded as the leading luminaries of the Orientalist movement.

Otto Pilny
Otto Pilny began his artistic education in Prague. He lived in Vienna and ended up settling in Zurich. Just like Ludwig Deutsch (1855–1935), Rudolf Ernst (1854–1932) and Carl Leopold Müller (1834–92), Pilny was encouraged to travel abroad. During his two trips to Egypt, a favorite destination of the Austro-Hungarian school, the first one in 1889 and later in 1892, he acquired the taste of painting Orientalist scenes of Middle Eastern landscapes, life, customs and people, something that he continued doing for his entire artistic career. His paintings also captured scenes of Islamic culture and traditions. In recent years, Pilny's work has attracted the eye of Museum curators, collectors and art dealers.
