Cavaliere Paolo Guidotti, also known as il Cavalier Borghese (Lucca, 1559 - 1629) was an Italian painter, sculptor and architect. He was mainly active in Rome, Lucca, his hometown, Reggio Emilia and Naples. His paintings and frescoes enriched many churches in Rome and Naples. The painting depicts the moment when the executioner hands Salome the head of the Baptist. Various characters assemble around a very young and astonished Salome as she receives the severed head of St. John on a plate. Among the characters surrounding the young girl is the executioner, ha has a sword in his hand and his face is marked by deep furrows. The other figures in the painting are mere onlookers who have gathered to witness the scene. Among them is a young soldier with piercing eyes who looks straight at the spectator. The princess that Guidotti decided to portray is a little girl who’s looking sadly at the Saint's head.
