About the Item

QUALITY is a classic Canadiana painting that focuses on sport fishing, by artist Peter Husband. The painting is in acrylic paint and oil pastel on stretched canvas, and measures 30 x 48". What began as an experiment for the artist – to gather on one canvas the outdoor activities he loves, the cottage life he loves, the country he loves – turned into a successful series of Canadiana paintings. Here the focus is on fishing, and playful juxtapositions abound – the J-Plug crank bait, a fishing rod barrel and line, the thill float and a vintage Canada Post 4¢ stamp with trains from 1851 and 1951 in the Canadian wilderness. Of course the details enrich the experience. Tying fishing line on a barrel needs a knot, here the artist names the Arbor, Nail, Snell and Palomar knots. The central image, the J-Plug lure with hooks, is "crank bait" – meant to be kept moving through water as you crank the reel so the lure will "wobble, swim and dive". Which you may or may not know, though you may still enjoy the fact that the harkening to tradition, sport and regional tradition perhaps, is intentional and intrinsic to the artist's project. While these details are compelling, it's the entirety of the painting that delivers a distinctive charm. Over 15 different visual elements are arranged in a relaxed, casual manner. Without a hint of contrivance, the artist is presenting a Canadian pastime and a Canadian history in a very modern framework. Peter Husband is a self-taught Canadian artist with equal passion in the worlds of technology, the great outdoors and cottage life, and Canadiana. His paintings are in collections in Canada, the United States and Mexico. A solo show of his work will be presented by Gagné Contemporary gallery in Toronto, Canada in 2023.

"Alas" is an acrylic painting with litho crayon, ink and collage elements on paper, measuring 36" high by 24" wide. It is one of 50 portraits that comprise Profiles in Democracy. Savage in their execution, they are nevertheless heartfelt expressions from the artist – politically, socially, culturally – in some cases featuring text and language in the portrait. From Dale Williams: "Profiles in Democracy is a group of 50 portraits completed in 2019. They are an expression of sorrow at the fracturing ideals that our country now teeters upon. The portraits are mostly – not exclusively – imaginary: a populace viewed from the inside out, people that someone like our current president might call losers. They perhaps “live in gaudy poverty, powerful destitution,” to quote Osip Mandelstam...
