About the Item
In this work, two young men stand shoulder to shoulder, their mirrored stance suggesting both kinship and individuality. Each figure is dressed in a striped shirt, accented by a patterned scarf and a vividly colored hat — one red, one green — emphasizing contrast within symmetry. Their sharply defined blue eyes pierce through the composition, creating an immediate emotional connection with the viewer. The terracotta-toned background, subtly textured with brushwork, adds warmth and grounding, placing the subjects in a space that feels timeless and monumental.
Letsu’s attention to detail — from the fine rendering of facial features to the rhythmic play of stripes and patterns — transforms a simple portrait into a layered narrative. The figures embody resilience, pride, and presence, while also speaking to universal ideas of duality, brotherhood, and shared experience.
As a rising name in African contemporary art, Letsu’s paintings resonate with collectors, curators, and enthusiasts seeking bold and meaningful examples of modern figurative painting. His ability to merge traditional references with a contemporary aesthetic makes his work stand out in the West Hollywood art gallery and Los Angeles art scene.
