Pierre Grisot was a French painter whose work epitomises a refined strand of mid‑20th‑century figurative art rooted in the traditions of the Parisian School. Born in Paris in 1911, Grisot was initially steered toward a scientific career at his family’s behest and trained as an engineer in Besançon. Despite this early technical training, his artistic vocation soon prevailed, and he moved to Paris to pursue formal study at the École des Arts Décoratifs, followed by advanced training at the prestigious École des Beaux‑Arts, where he earned a diploma qualifying him to teach drawing.
Although Grisot taught painting and drawing in his early career, he relinquished this role to devote himself fully to his art. His first exhibition was held in Paris in 1942, during the German occupation, marking the beginning of a lifelong presence in the French and international art world. He exhibited regularly in Paris — including at the Salon des Indépendants — and showed his work abroad in galleries and cultural institutions throughout Europe, Scandinavia and the United States.
Grisot’s oeuvre is characterised by its vibrant colour, elegant figuration and an urbane sensibility. He is best known for scenes of Parisian life — particularly elegant women in fashionable dress, café scenes, and promenades — alongside still lifes, floral compositions, and landscapes. His style, informed by Post‑Impressionism and the Art Deco palette, combines deft draughtsmanship with a lyrical use of colour and light, offering a view of post‑war French modernity that is at once graceful and lively.
In addition to his easel painting, Grisot worked as a fashion illustrator, producing hat and perfume advertisements for Christian Dior and contributions to L’Officiel de la Mode et de la Couture, an experience that further sharpened his sensitivity to contemporary style and the figure.
Grisot’s works have been auctioned and collected internationally; surviving works such as L’Averse (a rain scene of a stylish Parisienne) and portraits of modern life attest to his capacity to capture the joie de vivre of his milieu.
He died in 1995, leaving a body of work that offers both a pictorial record of mid‑century urban elegance and a distinctive voice within the broader narrative of French figurative painting.

Pierre Grisot
Pierre Grisot was a French post-Impressionist artist who was a member of the Parisian School of art. Grisot painted in a light hearted style that was all his own. Whether he was painting fashionable ladies of the day, nudes or flowers, his work was always full of colour and life and was very different from the styles of his contemporary painters. His paintings now serve as vintage reminders of the style of the mid 20th Century. One of the most enduring features of Grisot's work was his brilliant use of colour and his evocative renditions of the female visage. At the suggestion of his family, he was trained as an engineer and even took a job as one in Besancon, France. However, Pierre Grisot secretly loved the arts and eventually enrolled himself at the Ecole des Arts Decoratifs in Paris. There he studied for one year before he began studies at the Ecole des Beaux Arts where he received a diploma as a drawing instructor. Grisot initially taught painting and drawing but left to focus on his own art. He is also known for his hat and perfume advertisements for Christian Dior, and as a fashion illustrator for the journal 'L'Officiel de la Mode et de la Couture'. His first official exhibition was in Paris in 1942 and he travelled the world exhibiting his work in Germany, Belgium, Sweden and the United States.
