About the Item

Pietro della Vecchia (Vicenza, Italy, 1603 – Venice, Italy, 1678) Title: Bacchus and Ceres Medium: Oil on canvas Dimensions: without frame 109 x 130 cm – with frame 128 x 152 x 8 cm Not signed Expertise by Professor Egidio Martini Pietro della Vecchia was a versatile and prolific Italian painter who worked in many genres. During his career he also worked as an art restorer, as an art expert, and he even did expert valuations of artworks. After initially studying under Alessandro Varotari (known as Padovanino, 1588-1649), he turned his attention in particular to the works of Tiziano (1490-1576) and Giorgione (1478-1510). These and also Carlo Saraceni (1579-1620) had an influence on him, as did the painter Bernardo Strozzi (1581-1644) later on. In the 1640s, he was one of the leading painters of religious themes in Venice. He was married to the daughter of the Caravaggist Nicolas Régnier (1590-1667). The painting depicts the Greco-Roman deity Bacchus, god of wine-making, male fertility, festivity and insanity, and Ceres, the Roman goddess of agriculture, grain crops, fertility and motherly relationships. In the middle of a forest clearing, the format-filling figures framed by trees show a descending diagonal while a hilly landscape section appears in the upper right. Ceres lies next to Bacchus with her breasts bare and her silky blue robe, who is about to hand her a silver, moulded wine bowl.

It is a gentle and graceful Danae the one portrayed by Giovanni Giacomo Sementi. A painting in which the Milanese painter Pier Francesco Cittadini also collaborated by painting the golden basin filled with flowers to the left of the scene. The work shows various pictorial influences; from the Bolognese Emilian style, to that of Ludovico Carracci (1555 - 1619) and Guido Reni (1575 - 1642), to the Baroque and Roman style. The work features an elegant red drapery which serves as the background to the entire scene, but the real protagonist is the young woman with long red hair who is lying on a bed covered by a white sheet. The girl is naked except for a lapis lazuli blue mantle...

Hercules and Omphale, Old Master Painting, Mannerism, Baroque, Mythology, Prague
Located in Greven, DE
Hercules and Omphale Oil on panel, 52 x 41 cm According to legend, Hercules had to make atonement and became a slave to the Lydian queen Omphale. When she found out who her slave was, she married him. Falling for his mistress and made effeminate by the luxury of court life, the former hero allowed himself to become the laughing stock of the court. He dressed in women's clothes, spun wool and did other women's work, whereas Omphale wore his lion's skin and carried a wooden club. When the time of punishment was over, the hero realised his delusion and left Omphale. So far, the painting could not be clearly assigned to an artist. Nevertheless, it impresses with its fluid and convincing painting, whose colourfulness and conception are reminiscent of the Prague School around Bartholomäus Spranger. This work follows an engraving and an etching made by Michel Dorigny in 1643 after a design by Simon Vouet. It shows the same scene but the print differs in minor details from the present painting (see e.g. the head of the lion) and the treatment of the faces seems to be painted more detailed and refined. So far there is no painting...

Venus Paolo Fiammingo Paint Oil on canvas Old master 16th Century Italian Art
Located in Riva del Garda, IT
Pauwels Franck, known as Paolo Fiammingo (Antwerp, 1540 - Venice, 1596) Venus lying in a landscape Oil on canvas 116 x 150 cm. In antique frame 136 x 170 cm. The work is accompanied by a critical card by Dr. Federica Spadotto The splendid painting proposed sees portrayed, bare and stretched out on a red brocade cloth in gold sprinkled with roses, a refined and sensual Venus, in a composition with a profound symbolic value, and arriving at the perfect representation of the Renaissance woman who, like Venus, becomes an allegory love, eros, beauty and fertility. The canvas is part of the prestigious Venetian artistic and cultural environment of the second half of the sixteenth century, whose distinctive distinctive trait can be traced back to its cosmopolitan vocation. This characteristic, as Dr. Spadotto noted in her in-depth study, belongs to the same physiology of the Venetian capital, that is, being a distinctly commercial city located in a strategic point with respect to trade. Representing one of the liveliest ports in the Mediterranean also meant witnessing the continuous passage not only of goods, but of men, ideas, suggestions from distant countries, which influenced not only the taste of their people, but above all art. This happened thanks to the circulation of prints, as well as pictorial specimens, to which are added the stays of great foreign artists and, above all, the permanence in the capital of a non-negligible number of Dutch, Flemish and German masters. An emblematic case in this regard comes from Pauwels Franck (Antwerp, 1540 - Venice, 1596), better known as Paolo Fiammingo, who established himself in his native city at a young age - in 1561 a figure enrolled in the Guild of San Luca - and arrived in Venice in 1573. . He resided in Venice from 1584 until his death, although the stylistic and formal references of some of his works have led critics to believe that in previous years he had undertaken a journey to central Italy, or to Florence and Rome, where he would have metabolized the lively cultural debate that permeated these cities and which, on the other hand, seemed completely absent in Venice. Here Paolo will be fascinated by the sense of color and by the atmospheric component fixed on the canvas by Jacopo Tintoretto (Venice 1518 - 1594), of which he becomes a collaborator, to undergo, around 1590, the suggestion of Paolo Caliari...
