About the Item
Ralph Cahoon Jr.'s whimsical paintings are not only lighthearted and charming, they are also the hallmark of his creativity and imagination. His playful approach to painting and informal, folksy style made him one of the most beloved painters to come from Cape Cod. Cahoon's works are prized for their delightful, free spirit and Village Harbor is a wonderful example.
Ralph worked closely with his wife, Martha, and together they created furniture and paintings. He painted sailors and mermaids and she painted delicate pastoral scenes. They both began their careers as accomplished furniture decorators. However, in1953 a New York gallery owner and patron suggested they apply their talents to easel painting. Their work is deeply rooted in American folk-art traditions and invokes nostalgia for a life full of lighthearted good humor, simple charm, and popular pastimes.
