Ramesh Gorjala - Vishnu - 30 x 22 inches (unframed size)
Mixed Media on Paper
This mesmerizing painting by Ramesh Gorjala is a stunning example of how traditional Indian art and contemporary expression can merge seamlessly. Created using mixed media on paper, the work portrays the divine figure of Lord Vishnu or Krishna in profile, rendered in a striking blue tone that dominates the canvas. The artist intricately fills the deity’s form with a multitude of miniature mythological scenes, each delicately detailed in the Kalamkari style. These vignettes narrate sacred stories from Hindu mythology—depictions of divine beings, celestial events, and symbolic motifs of devotion. The golden circular patterns adorning the ear and the red background enhance the visual contrast, giving the composition both depth and vibrancy. Gorjala’s work reflects a deep spiritual narrative, where every detail serves as a reminder of India’s mythic continuity, connecting divinity, humanity, and artistic tradition in a single, harmonious composition.
Ramesh Gorjala is a master artist who shot to fame for his amazing handling of his subjects. His works steeped in Indian mythology reminds us of the various facets of our religion.
Ramesh' technique comes from the famous Kalamkari Crafts work that was done by Artisans of his village. He decided to use the sand to unique as part it on canvas.
Style : Gorjala works with a delicate and intricate technique, portraying his spiritual take on the subjects of Indian mythology through both his imagery and his process. His use of a palette dominated by gold, red and green creates a very rich and natural feel in each of his paintings, and the moods that he is able to create and convey add an antiquated yet contemporary dynamic to his work. His subjects, mainly the gods, goddesses and mythical forms of the South Asian pantheon, include Hanuman, Vishnu and Buddha, and are all painted with great sensitivity and attention to detail. Gorjala does not necessarily restrict himself to a single, large protagonist in his pieces. Instead, he integrates subjects, mixing not only one figure, but multiple images all unified into a broader character. This is sometimes brought together by fragments of text, usually in the background of his surfaces, adding a new dimension to them. Another repeated element in his work is the checkerboard pattern of black and shades of white and grey in the background, adding a noel and modern twist to pieces that have a largely traditional and spiritual feel.
His work focuses on traditional Indian heritage and culture, through sensitive and detailed mythological portrayals of various Indian gods and goddesses.
