About the Item

Wonderful little fashion sketch by Raoul Dufy. From the Estate of Andre Robert (Dufy’s studio assistant) to Anthony Field (La Galerie 18). Watercolor and ink on paper unsigned. 4.75" x 5.75", 8.25" x 10.25" framed. Raoul Dufy (1877–1953) was a French painter and designer known for his bright, decorative works influenced by Fauvism and Impressionism. After studying art in Le Havre and Paris, he was inspired by Fauvism in 1905 and later also explored Cézanne's and Cubist styles before developing his own unique approach to color and line. Dufy was also a successful designer of fabrics, ceramics, and book illustrations, and received the International Grand Prize for Painting at the 1952 Venice Biennale shortly before his death. Early life and education Born in Le Havre, France, on June 3, 1877. Started art education in night classes and later received a scholarship to study at the École des Beaux-Arts in Paris. His early work was influenced by Impressionism, particularly the works of Claude Monet. He encountered Fauvism at the Salon des Indépendants in 1905, which led him to adopt its vivid and bold style. He was also influenced by Paul Cézanne, which prompted him to use more subdued colors and structured compositions for a time. Briefly worked in a Cubist-influenced style with artists like Georges Braque, but returned to a more carefree Fauvist approach. Developed his signature style, which combined Impressionist and Fauvist elements with a "lightning-fast, calligraphic" line and colorful washes. He worked as an illustrator, a fabric designer for fashion designer Paul Poiret, and created sets and costumes for theater productions. Received a major commission for the 1937 Paris World's Fair to paint the mural "La Fee Electricite". Worked extensively in various media, producing woodcuts, textiles, ceramics, and tapestries. Later life and legacy Suffered from rheumatoid arthritis starting in 1937, which made painting difficult. Received successful experimental cortisone treatment in Boston in 1947. Received the Grand Prize for Painting at the 26th Venice Biennale in 1952. Died on March 23, 1953, in Forcalquier, France.
